1995 Mercedes C-280 Engine Troubleshooting

If your 1995 Mercedes C280 is experiencing engine difficulties, there may be a slew of problems and components that need to be replaced. Although it's impossible to describe every scenario, there are common troubleshooting tricks to deal with known issues of the C280 engines. Having a few specialty tools, such as an OBD scanner, and knowing how to diagnose your Mercedes can help you save time and money. Drive your Mercedes up on a set of car ramps and use a flashlight to inspect as much of the electrical harness wiring as possible. Most Mercedes-Benz vehicles manufactured between 1993 and 1997 have been known for having a faulty electrical harness that have caused fires or stalling out and loss of power while driving. If the wiring harness begins to disintegrate or degrade, have the entire harness replaced, as the problem will only continue to worsen, increasing the risk of driving the vehicle.
2 Disconnect the negative cable from your Mercedes C280 car battery and remove the throttle body hose clamp with a screwdriver. The throttle body is located between the intake manifold and the air filter cabin. Wearing rubber gloves and safety glasses, spray throttle-body cleaner into the air duct and use gentle brushing to dislodge any grime present in the component. If you hear cracking sounds coming from the throttle body when cold-starting the C280, you may need to replace the entire throttle body if the cleaner does not improve its performance.
3 Use an OBD II scanner to check the Mercedes-Benz engine troubleshoot codes. Locate the C280's OBD II terminal, which is located at the bottom left part of the steering column and plug in the OBD II scanner. Turn on the OBD II scanner and turn the ignition to the accessories position. Record the codes from the OBD II scanner and look them up on websites such as AutoZone or OBD II Codes.
4 Test electrical connections leading to any sensors that come up on the OBD II scanner before replacing the sensors themselves. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without cranking the engine and apply the probes of a multimeter, set to voltage, to the electrical harness connection. If the connection reads between 4.0 and 5.0 volts, then the sensor needs replacement.
5 Clean your MAF (mass air flow) sensor if you are experiencing rough idling or stalling out. DIsconnect the MAF sensor, which is located between the air filter cabin and the throttle body, by using a Torx screwdriver. Unplug the connector and clean it with MAF cleaner. Allow the MAF sensor to air dry before reinserting it into the MAF housing. Replace the MAF with a new sensor if the engine continues to run poorly.
6 Use a computer with internet access to look for potential problems through TSBs (technical service bulletins) or recalls. Currently, as of 2011, there are no recalls on the 1995 C280. However, there are 56 TSB summaries, which could help point out areas to troubleshoot when experiencing problems with your Mercedes.

Further 1995 Dodge Intrepid's Check Engine Light

Prior to the introduction of Onboard Diagnostics, Series II in 1996, most manufacturers including Chrysler used a system of blinking lights to communicate stored engine information to the vehicle owner. While OBD-II's vast array of sensors could deliver thousands of different trouble codes, the older OBD-I system is limited to but a few dozen. Other People Are Reading How to Turn Off the Check Engine Light on a Dodge How to Troubleshoot Dodge Intrepid Engine Problems Systems Monitored
The OBD monitors not only the engine via the sensors, but itself and the sensors. The computer monitors the battery and charging system voltage, the emissions system components, manifold air pressure, each of the fuel injectors, the idle-air control system, air-conditioning system, air-to-fuel ratio, crankshaft position and rpm, a number of functions in the transmission, antilock brakes and a number of other ancillary systems. The computer also monitors itself and sensors by continuously comparing the sensor inputs and ensuring they make sense.
Checking the Codes Chrysler's OBD-I offers mechanics two different options when it comes to pulling the codes. The technician can plug a specialized scanner into the computer diagnostic port and pull the code numbers or he can use the old "blinking light" or "self-retrieval" method. Pulling the codes with the scanner is faster and more accurate, but the blinking lights will work in a pinch if you don't have a scanner. Any chain auto parts store or dealership service center should have a complete code listing for your exact model and trim level. A repair manual will have the same information.
Don't Blink Without starting the engine, sit in the driver seat and turn the ignition key on three times in rapid succession: on, off, on, off, on. Note the check engine light begin to flash in sequence and pause, indicating the number code. The first series indicates the tens place, a short pause indicates it's finished with the tens place, the second series the ones place and a long pause means it's through with that series. Example: three flashes, a short pause, five flashes and a long pause indicate a code 35.
Further Diagnosis Don't treat the codes as gospel; the fact is that the OBD system will give you some idea of the basic engine malfunction (overheating, lean condition and more), but it's up to you to figure out exactly what's causing the failure. OBD-II is far better at pinpointing the exact cause of a failure, primarily since it collects data from so many more sensors. OBD-I data can be a bit misleading as well. For instance, the computer might record an EGR malfunction, but the culprit may in fact be a malfunctioning manifold air pressure sensor that fails to record accurately the pressure effects of exhaust gas in the manifold.

1993 Mercury Sable How to Retrieve a Code

The 1993 Mercury Sable was equipped from the factory with the fourth version of Ford's Electronic Engine Control (EEC-4) computer control system. Unlike the earlier EEC-3 system, the EEC-4 system featured an on-board computer diagnostic and data stream that could be accessed with the use of an automotive scan tool. Inexpensive scan tools and code readers are available at most auto parts stores, and the average do-it-yourself mechanic can retrieve codes from the Sable in just a few minutes. Locate the EEC-4 diagnostic connector under the hood. In the 1993 Sable this is on the passenger's side of the engine compartment between the strut tower and the firewall. The EEC-4 connector is a two-part connector that is snapped into a dust cover marked with the word "Diagnostic" on top.
2 Plug the Ford adapter of the scan tool into both parts of the diagnostic connector. Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position. Run the self diagnostics by selecting "Self-Test" from the main menu displayed on the scan tool's screen then selecting "KOEO." Turn the ignition key on and off three times within five seconds to start the Key-On-Engine-Off (KOEO) program. The program may take a few minutes to complete.
3 Read the stored codes after the on-board computer completes the KOEO program by selecting "Read Codes" from the main menu then selecting "KOEO Codes" on the next menu. Write the codes and their descriptions down and consult a service manual for your 1993 Sable for instructions on how to perform the necessary diagnostic procedures for each code.

Ask our experts now! 1988 Buick LeSabre, Park Ave Engine Troubleshooting Print this article All 1988 Buicks, including the LeSabre and Park Avenue, have an on-board diagnostic system that can assist in troubleshooting many engine problems. The system predates current OBD-II standardization, however, so current code scanners will not work with the system. However, all GM vehicles built before 1996 can be placed into a self-testing mode. While accessing a vehicle's fault codes are never the absolute answer to engine troubleshooting, the system can tell you where recent malfunctions have occurred. Other People Are Reading How Do I Read Codes for the 1988 Buick Electra? How to Check the Codes on a 1994 LeSabre Things You'll Need Jumper wire Pencil Notepad Show More Instructions 1
Locate the Buick's Assembly Line Data link. In both the LeSabre and the Park Avenue, the ALDL can be found directly beneath the steering wheel
2 Connect the "A" and "B" ports on the ALDL with jumper wire. The two ports are on the top row of slots, and to the far right. Insert one end of the jumper wire into the "A" port at the end of the row, and insert the other end into the "B" port, which will be to the immediate left.
3 Start the vehicle's electrical system with the ignition key. Leave the engine off.
4 Write down how many times the check engine light flashes. General Motors fault codes are two numbers. A fault code's first number will flash, and that will be followed by a brief pause. The second number will be represented by short flashes. For example, fault code 31 will be conveyed by three flashes, a short pause, and 1 short flash.
5 Look up the fault codes online. The fault codes for both the LeSabre and the Park Avenue will not be in their respective owner's manuals. Once you have found the fault code definitions, copy them out next to the code numbers you jotted down.
6 Open the engine compartments on either the LeSabre or the Park Avenue. Start at the top of your malfunction list and work down. Cross out codes once you know they are not causing the problems the vehicle is currently experiencing.
