Vehicles sold in the US since 1995 have onboard diagnostic (OBD) computers. An OBD monitors the vehicle, activating a dashboard light if it detects problems. The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandates vehicle monitoring with an OBD. The second-generation onboard diagnostic system is known in the industry as OBD-II. Devices called code scanners can read the codes in OBD-II computers.
Malfunctions An OBD-II computer monitors sensors throughout the vehicle, especially in the engine and emission system. When a sensor reading falls outside acceptable limits, the OBD turns on the "Check Engine" light and stores a trouble code in memory. In post-1995 Nissans, you can read an OBD-II code using a hand-held scanner.
Code P0448 Code P0448 is one of a standard set used by OBD-II computers on all vehicles. The code reports "Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Shorted."
